Performance diagnostics are disabled by default on new virtual machines but can be enabled at the user’s discretion. Azure makes performance statistics available to users via a web portal and APIs, making it easy to collect sufficient data for performance diagnostics.

 Performance diagnostics allow system administrators to view and resolve performance issues quickly. VMs connected to an Azure network can report their current performance metrics via the Azure Performance Monitoring page or the Performance Monitor page. Administrators can then take immediate steps to improve VM performance. For example, if a VM reports a slow response time, it would be beneficial to enable compression on that VM’s storage account. Compression reduces the amount of data that needs to be transferred between VMs and the cloud, reducing response time and saving money on bandwidth costs. Based on the collected data, administrators can also identify underutilized resources or insufficiently performing applications using predictive analytics. 

Performance diagnostics can be enabled from the Azure Performance Monitoring page and the Performance Monitor page. The Azure portal provides a high-level overview of VM resources allowing system administrators to focus on critical issues first. Once an issue has been identified, system administrators can dive deeper into VM metrics using performance diagnostics tools such as Excel or Power BI for big data analysis. Alternatively, Microsoft Excel templates exist for collecting and analyzing performance statistics based on real-world scenarios such as SQL Server transactions per minute (TPM) or Windows Server Page File usage per minute (pfm). 

Performance statistics such as response time, throughput, memory utilization, and CPU metrics are collected by default for each virtual machine on an Azure virtual network. This information is stored in Microsoft Event Viewer under Application Events > Virtual Machine Metrics > Virtual Machines\<vmname>. The data is stored in machine-specific buckets so that users only need access to one Azure subscription for their organization instead of managing multiple subscriptions for their VMs.

 Performance diagnostics provide a way for organizations to monitor their cloud infrastructure and take necessary steps towards optimizing applications’ performance in real-time. System administrators should have confidence in this tool before assigning any production tasks to Azure workloads.
